If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.
The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering experience…
I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….

You’re not as fat as you imagine.
Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you.
Sing.
Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind… the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.
Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.
Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own..
Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.
Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.
Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good.
Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders.
Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out. Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth. But trust me on the sunscreen…

And the constant of images, transgresses time and place... the geography of pain and injustice, in the almost everywhere..

But, even though, the horizon seems to be endless, there actually is a bank on the other side, that you can reach.

If only, upon occasion, you do find the courage to do stick your arms and legs beyond the oppressive rule...

URUGUAY, BABY!!! ;-PPPP

Colonia del Sacramento.... Absolutely beautiful...

The oldest town in Uruguay, and one of the most relaxed and picturesque places I've seen....

These streets, really got to me...

The beach, of Rio de la Plata (a RIVER? I mean I still find it hard to believe that there's no other bank in the horizon...) and on the other side of the road, summer houses and villas.

Aptly so!!!;-P

The Plaza de toros Real de San Carlos, a very impressive bull ring that has been in operation for only a brief time.

And done in a moorish style, no less!!

And now, to derelict to use, still really impressive.

And of course, the Barrio Histórico, where the Portuguese and Spanish fight for domnance over the city is very apparent.

The tranquil look of the place does not really convey now the years of changing of hands of the place between the Portuguese and the Spanish.

It is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The drawbdidge and moat leading into the castle.

A regular tourist attraction, since over half of the population of Colonia del Sacramento, live of tourism.

A portuguese styled street, the oldest road in town.

Yeap... wars....

The mines of Wanda, extremely spectacular..

At a distance of a couple of kilometres from the main road, a very nice walk (if you choose to not take a taxi there) which will allow you to pass through the houses of the people living around the mines, and offer you a chance to be accosted by innumerable little kids selling stones and little stone trees!!!! The real kind of kids, the ones that walk barefoot and play in the dirt!!! Though, this also makes you wonder, about children's rights, and living conditions as well...

The mines are still operational...

Geodes are simply, everywhere....

... and soooo beautiful....

You can have a guided tour, the guides are very helpful!!

The Argentinian side of the cataracts,everything is very accessible, though it took us about 6-7 hours to do it all at an easy pace (including the boat trip, hehehhee)!

La Garganta del Diablo!! And, no, neither camera or Sophia are waterproof!!! Totally soaked through, totally loved it! ;-P

(Yeap.. we did the dolby surround of the cataracts, totally worth it, even though the Brazilian national park is rather more commercialized and less natural than the Argentinian one, it is an absolute must, cause you get to see the Argentinian cataracts in full view!!!

So, worth going there too!!! Second day of cataract showers, but hey, what are swimsuits for? ;-P

...and the small dock for the boat trip that takes you under the spray, on both sides of the island, in the speedboats, also tooootally worth it, and a unique experience!! Be prepared to get soaked to the bone (to the swimsuit, rather, hehehe).

Έχε το νου σου στο παιδί

Για 13η χρονιά, η ρόδα του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Ολυμπίας για Παιδιά και Νέους, συνέχισε να γυρίζει, βγάζοντάς το από την παιδική ηλικία στην εφηβεία του, και με το Camera Zizanio, να χοροπηδάει γύρω του, γεμίζοντας με εικόνες και όνειρα παιδιών τις οθόνες μας...

Παιδιά, που τολμούν... που κάνουν το άλμα ψηλά, πάνω από τα προβλήματα, την γκρίνια, την μιζέρια των γύρω τους... Που την βγάζουν στην οθόνη μας και μας λένε "αυτός είναι ο κόσμος σας, και δεν θέλουμε να γίνει και ο δικός μας... Αξίζουμε κάτι καλύτερο και το διεκδικούμε... Κοίτα!"

Παιδιά αμάθητα, που διψούν να μάθουν... Παιδιά, που κουβαλάνε μέσα τους την απαξίωση απέναντι στον πολιτισμό, των γονιών και της κοινωνίας τους.. που περάσανε τις πρώτες δύο μέρες μουρμουρίζοντας και χασκογελώντας στις προβολές, για να φτάσουν την τρίτη να μαλώνουν τους άλλους ώστε να μην ενοχλούνε, και να ρίξουν το πρώτο τους δάκρυ, στον πόνο του άλλου, να εκφράσουν την πρώτη τους σοβαρή άποψη, να εκτιμήσουνε, να απολαύσουνε, να μάθουνε να καταλαβαίνουν... Παιδιά που κλείσαν το κινητό τους και βγάλαν τα ακουστικά από τα αυτιά τους... Που στάθηκαν κατάματα απέναντι στην οθόνη, για να βρουν τον εαυτό τους πάνω της... Παιδιά, που για πρώτη φορά, μάθανε να βλέπουνε πραγματικά γύρω τους, με τα δικά τους μάτια.... Παιδιά, που η φωνή τους έγινε σιωπή για να ακούσουν την φωνή του διπλανού τους, και να φτιάξουν πια, τα δικά τους λόγια...

Παιδιά που είδαν ότι οι προβολείς και τα φώτα, δεν είναι μόνο τα reality shows... Που για πρώτη κάποια, και για πολλοστή κάποια άλλα, είδαν ότι πολιτισμός και δημιουργία δεν είναι απλές λέξεις στο λεξικό, και τσιτάτα στις ειδήσεις...

Παιδιά, που στο μαύρο θέατρο της ζωής, είδαν ότι το τέρας, μπορείς να το βρεις και να το νικήσεις... Τον μπαμπούλα, μπορείς να τον κάνεις ανίσχυρο στα όνειρά σου...

Παιδιά, που την ώρα που αντιστέκονται οι μεγάλοι γύρω τους, κάνουν τα λόγια και τις εικόνες τους πέτρες απέναντι στα ψαλίδια των άλλων και το χαρτί τους διακήρυξη... Που μαθαίνουν τις πρώτες λέξεις απέναντι στο άβουλο χαρμάνι των σιωπηλών ανθρώπων γύρω τους... Που κάνουν την αγανάκτηση, δημιουργία...

Που στη μιζέρια και την έλλειψη παιδείας των άλλων, κατορθώνουν να σταθούν με κριτική στάση και σκέψη... Παιδιά, που ελπίζουμε να κάνουν ένα βήμα από την γκρίνια, την αμάθεια, την τάση των γύρω τους να τραβούν πίσω αυτό που βλέπουν ότι πάει μπροστά, από την ζήλεια και την ανικανότητά τους, και ό,τι δεν τους αρέσει να το φτιάχνουν με τον δικό τους τρόπο... Παιδιά, που στη στάση και την απραξία, κάνουν ένα βήμα. Παιδιά, που στο χέρι τους κρατούν ένα μολύβι, μια κάμερα. Παιδιά, που στο παράθυρο στον κόσμο, τραβάνε πίσω την κουρτίνα, και το ανοίγουνε....

Παιδιά που ανακαλύπτουν τους συνομηλίκους τους από άλλες χώρες, που φτιάχνουν δεσμούς και φιλίες δημιουργώντας, πέρα από τον στενό τους μικρόκοσμο.....

Παιδιά που ψάχνουν να βρουν εικόνες γύρω τους...

Παιδιά που χρωματίζουν τις λέξεις των άλλων... Που βρίσκουνε νόημα στα ονόματα των χωρών στο χάρτη....

Γραμμές που σβύνουν τις αποστάσεις...

Γεύσεις που ταξιδεύουν....

Ήχοι και εικόνες...

Ήχοι, που σβύνουν τις αποστάσεις, τις γλώσσες, κουλτούρες που συναντιούνται πάνω σ'ένα τραπέζι που δονείται...

Κάμερες που αποτυπώνουν την χαρά της συνάντησης...

...όπου το δούναι και λαβείν,....

... γίνεται ένας χορός, γίνεται χέρια στον αέρα, γίνεται πάθος και μπριο, γίνεται ο ρυθμός που τους συνεπαίρνει όλους.. Μικρούς, μεγάλους...

Μικρά και μεγάλα όνειρα, που γεμίζουνε τα μάτια μας...

Μικροί κριτές, που έρχονται σε επαφή, με έναν διαφορετικό κινηματογραφικό κόσμο... Που αναλαμβάνουν την ευθύνη για το τί τους αρέσει και τί όχι... Παιδιά, που διαμορφώνουν μια δική τους άποψη, πέρα από το melting pot ενός υπέρμετρα καταναλωτικού κόσμου, όπου η ποιότητα εξαφανίζεται χάρην του κέρδους και του υπερθεάματος... Παιδιά, που μιλάνε για ποιότητα σεναρίου, σκηνογραφίας...

Παιδιά, που ενώνουν τις φωνές τους σε πολυφωνικά σχήματα...

Παιδιά, που αφήνουν το χέρι τους να ακουμπήσει αυτό του άλλου... Παιδιά, που μεταδίδουν την κίνηση...

Παιδιά, που βλέπουν το πάνω και το μπροστά αντί για την μιζέρια του τίποτα....

Παιδιά, που κάνουν το βήμα, και το άλμα...

Παιδιά, που γράφουν ακόμα και στον αέρα, τα δικά τους βήματα....

Παιδιά, που στροβιλίζουνται.. Που γίνονται η ρόδα που γυριζει...

Παιδιά, που δημιουργούν, πολλάκις σε πείσμα των μεγάλων... Που σηκώνονται από τον καναπέ τους και αρθρώνουν τον δικό τους λόγο....

Παιδιά, που φτιάχνουν τις δικές τους ερωτήσεις και αναζητούν την δική τους απάντηση στον κόσμο που τους επιβάλουν οι μεγάλοι... Παιδιά, που δημιουργούν...

Που φτιάχνουν τα δικά τους σφυριά και δαμάζουνε την φλόγα στο ατσάλι.... Για αυτό,...

"Υπερασπίσου το παιδί
γιατί αν γλιτώσει το παιδί
υπάρχει ελπίδα"

Για μια βδομάδα που έδωσε το αμόνι στα παιδιά και τους νέους που φτιάξαν το δικό τους σφυρί, που λιώσανε το δικό τους ατσάλι... για να φτιάξουν και άλλα σφυριά, να δαμάσουνε κι άλλο ατσάλι... Για μια βδομάδα που έδωσε χώρο στις λέξεις της Αγγελικής, του Κώστα, και ένα σωρό άλλων, να φτάσουνε στα αυτιά των μικρών, για να φτιάξουν τις δικές τους προτάσεις... Για μια βδομάδα, που δίνει την ευκαιρία σε μια μικρή πόλη, να αφήσει λίγο την μικρότητα και την μιζέρια και να βρει χώρο να δημιουργήσει... Για μια βδομάδα, που φέρνει κοντά, άξιους και δημιουργικούς ανθρώπους, από όλον τον κόσμο... Που γεμίζει με ιδέες, λέξεις και εικόνες, τον κόσμο... Για μια βδομάδα, που κάνει τους μεγάλους να δώσουν λόγο στους μικρούς, και τους μικρούς, να διδάξουν τους μεγάλους.... Για μια βδομάδα πολιτισμού, τέχνης, δημιουργίας, που κάνει τις μικρότητες να φαίνονται ακόμα πιο μικρές και τις εξαφανίζει στον δικό τους βάλτο, χτίζοντας γέφυρες πάνω του....

Οι μικροί (μικρότεροι απλώς) για όλους, και οι ερμηνείες των μεγάλων, για αυτούς...

- Ναι, σωστά... βέβαια, για μια στιγμή, νόμισα ότι είναι της παρηγοριάς, λόγω θεματολογίας της ταινίας... Με αυτά που δρομολογούνται.. τι λέω... που _ήδη_ τραβάμε στην εκπαίδευση... Όχι "Entre les murs", αλλά ανάμεσα στις Συμπληγάδες.....

And the sugarcoating, was not only on the birthday cake but in the luring words of the wannabe council members at the square, under the sycamore trees that have witnessed so many "θα" in over a century, words, words, that don't always come cheap, but very few deeds...

-You know, there's such a thing as an ideology? Which you don't have?

And the guy, with the skittery glance that will not look you in the eye, moves away, thinking of the next bought votes, people's consciousness, (or lack of) for hire... Tit for tat.... And it's a good thing to know, that at least, in one table, in the shade from the almost blazing sun, next to the bay, there is such a thing as ideology and respect in the everyday life of a generation, not yet altogether lost.

And as you get out of the bar for a moment, just checking where Orion is in the sky, you walk into the news vans, sat disks on top, and you wonder.... Food for thought...

Till everything clicks into place, and you realise that you share spacetime with the "future" Prime Minister, so no wonder why all the racket..... And sitting at the bar, with the blasting music and the night catching on to a rhythm usually reserved for the summer months only, in the middle of our three bar stools, the laughter going round and round, and the cozy, comfortable talk of years past, of the present, the future, the mind gathers around all the building blocks of people and events that led to this specific moment in time....

And from the apparent havoc of new moments, new people, new events, new ways of structuring the next second, the next moment, the next thread in your life, you put your hand out, and you start anew, with all the knowledge of a well lived past, the comfortable voices in your ears and the reassuring smiles that come with them, providing a background you can lean on, making sure that all the noise of the little or big blocks that don't match, will not hinder your way.....

Λοιπόν, μετά από endless drooling πάνω στο Sony του Ernesto, (hehehe, :-P) η απόφαση να κάνει μια ωραία βόλτα μέχρι το Pixmania το μισό σχεδόν δεκαπενθήμερο, ήταν απλά θέμα nanoseconds... (Ναι, ναι, ξέρω, παρασύρομαι εύκολα....). Φυσικά, ο Murphy δεν μας άφησε παραπονεμένους, αλλά επειδή είμεθα ενοχλητικοί και επίμονοι, μετά από διάφορες μικροπεριπέτειες που τις τραβήξανε οι κολλητοί συμμέτοχοι και αυτοί στο coveting του συγκεκριμένου gadgetακίου (oh, guys, you ARE so very kind...), ναι, ναι, I am so the proud owner ενός BeBook Neo!

Παρόλο που το Sony ήταν για ένα χρόνο περίπου μέσα στα gadgetικά όνειρα που κατά καιρούς (συνέχεια) διαταράσσουν τον ξύπνιο μου, μετά από έρευνα των κολλητών πάλι, η ομήγυρις έκλινε ως προς το συγκεκριμένο για πολλούς και διάφορους λόγους ΠΑΡΟΛΟ που το μοναδικό χρώμα στο οποίο κυκλοφορεί, είναι το άσπρο... Seriously, όμως, guys, ΑΣΠΡΟ?? Μπλιαξ... που το ωραίο χρωματάκι του Sony, το sturdy σασί του και η γερή κατασκευή του....

Το BeBook, έχει σχετικά λιγότερο γερή κατασκευή από το πολυdrooled over Sony, (και είναι και άσπρο... άκου άσπρο... μπλιαξ...) και τα πλαστικά του έχω την αίσθηση ότι θα είναι πολύ εύπεπτα άμα βρεθούνε στα χέρια (και το στόμα) των νηπίων που κυκλοφορούνε στα πέριξ, αλλά επειδή για όλα τα προβλήματα έχουμε μια λύση, η θήκη του (που ΔΕΝ περιλαμβάνεται στο κουτί συσκευασίας από το Pixmania που το πουλάει σχέτο εντελώς, χωρίς προ-εγκατεστημένα βιβλία και λεξικά), soon to be acquired, είναι αρκούντως μαύρη και το κρύβει εντελώς!!!! ;-) Γιατί είπαμε... πολύ άσπρο βρε παιδάκι μου....

Χωράει εκατοντάδες βιβλία, η επεκτάσιμη μνήμη του με SD card φτάνει μέχρι τα 16G, που υπεραρκούν για να κουβαλάς πάνω σου μεγάλο μέρος της γνώσης (και της βλακείας) της ανθρωπότητας και αρκετά για να μου προκαλέσουν ντελίριο απληστίας..... ;-D

Το wifi (για την οποία δυνατότητα σκάσαμε τα παραπάνω μπικικίνια αντί να πάρουμε κάποιο από τα άλλα της αγοράς) λειτουργεί ωραιότατα, και μπορείς άνετα, αν και κάπως αργά (δικαιολογημένα βέβαια) να χρησιμοποιήσεις το ίντερνετ, διαβάζει ελληνικές και ξένες ιστοσελίδες με άνεση και το γεγονός ότι είναι ασπρόμαυρο, δεν ενοχλεί όσο πίστευα. Μπορείς, εκτός από την αναζήτηση λέξεων σε λεξικό, το μαρκάρισμα κειμένου και την χρήση βιβλιοδεικτών, να κρατήσεις και χειρόγραφες σημειώσεις, η ανταπόκριση της πένας είναι πολύ ικανοποιητική, σίγουρα πιο καλή από ότι στο Tungsten...

H πλοήγηση, από την στιγμή που θα την χρησιμοποιήσεις, εύκολη!!! Και βουρ στην ανάγνωση!!

Κρατάει αρκετές πληροφορίες per item, και κάθε φορά σου ανοίγει το κάθε αρχείο εκεί που έχεις σταματήσει την προηγούμενη!!! Cool!!! ;-)

Το μέγεθος της γραμματοσειράς αλλάζει ανάλογα με τα γούστα του καθενός (και την στραβομάρα, χοχοχοχοχο) και η ανάγνωση είτε είσαι σε κλειστό χώρο είτε κατά λιακού όπως πολλάκις και συχνάκις γίνεται, είναι απροβλημάτιστη!!!!

All in all, a new addiction... Είναι μικρό, εύχρηστο, χωράει ανετότατα στην τσάντα του Sport Billy που πολύ χάρηκε που ξεφορτώθηκε τις τεράστιες κουμούτσες που κάνανε τα φερμουάρ να ζούνε καθημερινούς εφιάλτες, και είναι τόσο μα τόσο απλό το να έχεις μαζί σου ανά πάσα στιγμή ό,τι θέλεις... Η τεράστια βιβλιογραφία που τόσον καιρό είχα στον υπολογιστή και στραβωνόμουνα μετά από 4 σελίδες, τώρα είναι τόσο προσπελάσιμη, που κάνει μια μεγάλη μερίδα των εγκεφαλικών μου κυττάρων να χορεύουν ενθουσιασμένα!!! Don't mistake me, τα βιβλία, παραμένουν πάντα βιβλία και δεν νομίζω να υπάρξει στιγμή που να μην γεμίζουν τα ράφια και τις βιβλιοθήκες με καινούριες προσθήκες... Και παρόλο που μου αρέσει η αίσθηση του χαρτιού στα ακροδάχτυλά μου, η μυρωδιά του τυπωμένου χαρτιού, και το θρόισμα που κάνουν οι σελίδες, μου αρέσει εξίσου η άμεση πρόσβαση στις λέξεις που έχω αφημένες σε άλλα σπίτια, που είναι κρυμμένες σε μακρινές βιβλιοθήκες, που είναι γραμμένες σε άλλες γλώσσες, που είναι παλιές, που είναι καινούριες...

Γιατί ο χορός των λέξεων πάνω στη σελίδα, είτε αυτή είναι ηλεκτρονική είτε χάρτινη, είναι αυτός που κρύβει μέσα του την απαράμιλλη γοητεία... το χαρτί, ηλεκτρονικό ή μη, παραμένει πάντα το μέσον για το ξετύλιγμα της μαγείας που θα σε ταξιδέψει!!

Αγαπητέ γονιέ...

Όταν εγώ, ένας εντελώς ξένος άνθρωπος και όσον αφορά τον τόπο σου και τους ανθρώπους που μένουν σε αυτόν, που απλά μένω εδώ για λίγο καιρό και δεν έχω ιδιαίτερους δεσμούς ούτε με την οικογένειά σου ούτε με τους φίλους σου ούτε με τον κοινωνικό σου περίγυρο, ενδιαφέρομαι περισσότερο για την υγεία και την σωματική ακεραιότητα του παιδιού σου, και παίρνω υπεύθυνα θέση όσον αφορά την προστασία του από ό,τι τον απειλεί σε σχέση με σένα, τότε, Houston, we have a problem...

Γιατί για να διδάξω ένα παιδί, να του μάθω αυτά που του χρειάζονται και κυρίως, να το μάθω να σκέφτεται, θα πρέπει πρώτα, να το έχω ζωντανό, αρτιμελές και υγιές... Και είναι πολύ θλιβερό να προσπαθώ πολύ περισσότερο από σένα για να ισχύουν αυτές οι συνθήκες.... για αυτό, πάρε επιτέλους την ευθύνη της ζωής αυτού του μικρού ανθρώπου που είναι, πρωτίστως, στα δικά σου χέρια.......
